The Diving Dhoni:
The dhoni is a 30 ft traditional Maldivian hull, diving dedicated
boat equipped with 2 compressors, steel scuba cylinders and, of
course, O2 and first aid kits. All diving takes place from this
smaller vessel so that we can get closer to dive sites. No struggling
against the current to get back to the ship, just float in the warm
clear water and wait for the dhoni to pick you up wherever you surface.
At the beginning of the cruise each diver is allocated a space for
their dive gear on the dhoni. Once in place, your bcd stays on your
cylinder for the entire trip. The dhoni crew rinses each set with
fresh water at the end of each day. No heavy dive bags to lug around.
The dhoni also carries 10 liter, 12 liter and 15 liter steel tanks,
just tell your dive guide your preference at the beginning of the
week and you won’t have to worry about getting the right sized
tank again for the rest of the cruise.

After each dive the dhoni returns to Barutheela for more food and
relaxation. The crew of the dhoni is renowned for their fresh coconut,
served to the divers as she travels back to the mother ship. |
